Delibes - The Huntresses

from Sylvia

The score for Sylvia was considered so highly by Tchaikovsky that he remarked to fellow-composer Taneyev that had he heard it first he would never have dared to write Swan Lake which he claimed was “very poor stuff indeed by comparison”. In the Ashton choreography, the Amazonian attendants of Sylvia, and Sylvia herself (pictured) leap threateningly toward the orchestra pit as the horns play the hunting theme.

This performance was recorded at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London.
